Clinton Street Baking Company

New York City is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat no matter what you are in the mood for. If you are one of those people who enjoys breakfast menus for dinner, you will not be let down in the Big Apple. New Yorkers understand that you shouldn’t have to limit yourself to dinner food for dinner.

There are plenty of delicious restaurants that you can head to at dinnertime for your fix of breakfast foods, but everyone has their favorite spot. My favorite spot for some evening breakfast food is in the East Village.

Clinton Street Baking Company, located between East Houston Street and Stanton Street (on Clinton Street), is the hotspot when it comes to breakfast for dinner. Clinton Street Baking Company is very popular with the breakfast and brunch crowd, so going there for dinner always saves you some time when it comes to having a wait.

Clinton Street Baking Company is known for their pancakes and I highly suggest you trying them. Prepare yourself to bite into some of the fluffiest pancakes you have ever tried. I always go for the chocolate chunk pancakes, which come filled with chocolate chunks as well as some extra chunks on top for a little added bonus. The pancakes always come with a side of maple syrup that is clearly the real deal, not that chemical-filled fake stuff.

If you are more of an egg person, there are some amazing egg options as well. There are also always the non-breakfast food options for those lame friends of yours who want to tag along for dinner, but don’t like breakfast food. Their fried chicken is pretty impressive, so that’s another great suggestion.

I have never been disappointed by the service at this restaurant and the environment is very relaxed. Plus, every table gets a plate of biscuits to start off their meal instead of bread like at most diners.

Clinton Street Baking Company is definitely a “don’t miss” for anyone who is in New York City.

Time Out Sydney Internship Final Week

It’s been two weeks now since I finished my internship at Time Out Sydney. I didn’t mean to wait so long to complete this, but next thing I knew I was in Cairns and then Melbourne and ran out of any time while still in Australia to write this. I want to start off by saying how amazing my summer internship was as a whole. I learned so much about the magazine and online journalism world. My writing skills also improved quite a bit.

During my last week at Time Out Sydney I worked on fact checking for the Melbourne August issue and did several event listings. I did research for a piece on where to go stargazing in and around Sydney. I was told that that piece is in the August issue of the magazine, but I can’t seem to find it online. Hopefully I will be able to get a magazine sent to me so I can see it for myself!

Wednesday of my last week there was an event that Time Out was helping with, so I had to do some work for that. The work consisted mostly of perforating paper (someone has to do it)! Working for a magazine means you are part of a team and (especially as an intern) you sometimes have to help out with things that aren’t in your “field.” That is a huge thing I learned this summer. It makes sense in the long run, I just never thought about it before.

My last day was extremely bittersweet. I already miss everyone I got to work with this summer and hope to have an experience even half as amazing as this one sometime in the future.

Time Out Sydney Weeks 6&7

The past two weeks at my internship have flown by and I somehow have just gotten a spare moment to write about them. I have done several listings over the past weeks. I also had to work some more on the Ugg Feature I had been working on during my fifth week. I am still to this day chasing after a few stores to get images, so hopefully I will have that all sorted soon. Two days in my sixth week of my internship were spent walking down Crown Street in Surry Hills with another intern checking out how the salt at each café was served. Seeing as how a big portion of Time Out is their Restaurants and Cafés section, they need to keep up to date on what is going on in that world. Recently, it has become a thing for cafés to serve their salt in bowls that you just grab salt out of with your fingers. Of course, this is a health issue. With this in mind, we had to check out what cafés were serving their salt this way. We were asked to go down Crown Street because it is a well-known street full of cafés. Luckily, we did not find many spots serving their salt like that.
Last week, I did several transcriptions throughout the week. It’s an interesting task to be asked to do because you learn a lot while listening to the interviews. It is also a challenge to get down every word that is said and to make sure not to miss out on anything, especially things that could be important to a story. I also wrote a blog post for Time Out Melbourne about where to go throughout the city to celebrate National Chocolate Day – whether it were places that were actually celebrating or places that had great chocolate offerings. Another awesome thing I got to do last week was going with my supervisor, Nick, to a film screening. It was an Australian film called Down Under, which is about the riots that happened in Cronulla ten years ago. The film was definitely a dark comedy that was very interesting to see. After getting back to the office from seeing the film, I spent several hours doing social media work – I had to log onto Time Out Sydney’s Instagram and go through specific tags and like all of the recent photos to try and boost Time Out Sydney’s follower count. The last thing I was asked to do during my seventh week at my internship that took up a bit of time was to go onto Facebook and join the Halal Snack Pack Appreciation Society. A Halal Snack Pack is something they sell at Kebab places all over Australia. It’s pretty much everything that’s bad for you about a kebab: french fries covered in (melted) cheese, kebab meat and sauce (the ultimate sauce is garlic, barbecue and hot chilli mixed together). Once I joined, I had to scroll through the posts and find the top 15 places to get a Halal Snack Pack in Melbourne – the top 15 was determined based on how often the place was mentioned in posts. I then had to send the list over to an editor and someone in the Melbourne office now is going to go out and try all of the Halal Snack Packs — good luck to whomever that is, talk about a stomach ache!
My eight and final week at my internship has just started and I can’t believe I am already here. I am shocked at how fast my time in Sydney has flown by. I am definitely not ready to be done with this experience.

Time Out Sydney Week 5

This past week I had several big jobs. I started off the week working on a feature story about restaurants to go to for Christmas in July. Christmas in July is a thing here in Sydney since it’s finally cold enough out for it to make sense to eat a nice Christmas roast. I also worked on fact checking for the July issue of Time Out Sydney. The bulk of my work this week was fact checking since the July issue was just a few days away from being printed. The other big thing I did this week was I wrote a feature story on where to buy UGGs in Sydney. I spent one day walking all around the city looking for stores with the best priced UGG boots. I then had to compile several of the best stores I discovered into a feature story that will eventually get posted onto the website. The rest of my week consisted of making event listings for things going on around Sydney. I am starting to write about events that will be happening after I actually leave Sydney. On Wednesday, I got to attend an event at the National Maritime Museum where we got to see a new exhibit at the museum before it opened to the public. It was an awesome experience and I definitely would not have gotten to see it otherwise. It’s insane that I have already finished my fifth week at my internship. I am definitely not ready to come home.
Here are a few more of my listings that have been posted on the website:

Time Out Week 4

This past week marked a month at my internship. I am shocked at how fast time is flying by. It still feels like I just arrived the other day. It’s already coming up on the end of June, which means the Time Out July magazines will be published soon. I did a decent amount of fact checking for both Melbourne and Sydney’s July issues during the week. This mostly consisted of checking addresses, venue hours, website URLs, and phone numbers. Every once in awhile I would catch a spelling error or a missed word, but that was very rare. In the beginning of the week, I spent some time sorting through the competitions and adding people’s names and e-mails to a master list of everyone who has signed up for specific competitions. I also wrote up another competition for the website. I did some more event listings during the week as well. Doing event listings is pretty much a daily thing for me. I like to think I am getting better at them. In fact, one of the event listings I wrote up is being published in the July issue in the Things To Do section. It is a listing about a festival that is going on in July at Circular Quay for Bastille Day. On Thursday, I started researching what restaurants offered either a Christmas in July special or Sunday Roast. I then compiled a list and went through it with the Bar and Pub Editor, Emily. We then shortened the list down and since then I’ve been working on writing blurbs about all that you can get at each of these restaurant’s for Christmas in July. It’s taken a decent amount of research to find everything I’ve needed. Definitely a learning experience.

Here are links to some of what I wrote this past week:

Time Out Week 3

My third week at my internship was slow again in comparison to my first week. I’m starting to think that maybe my first week was just exciting because it was my first week doing something new. Either way, I am still so happy at my internship. The people here are amazing and any work within Time Out’s company is great experience for me. I spent some time on Monday working on laminating things for the Time Out Pub Awards that were going on Monday night. I actually got to attend the awards, which was a really cool experience. I ate some great food and tried some top notch beer that night. On Monday I also had to work on researching facts and find images on Instagram of the insane storm that came through Sydney over the weekend. Another intern then took that information and wrote a blog post, which ended up getting an unbelievable amount of views on Time Out’s website. I also continued to clean up the PR Excel master list. Throughout the week I also transcribed several interviews. Most of the interviews I transcribe are ones with musicians, at least that is what most of the ones I worked on this week were. It’s a pretty good skill to have – transcribing interviews, but it’s extremely exhausting since I have to type so much. Another task I had to do was research through Time Out Sydney’s website what was going on in Sydney in the upcoming weekend. I then had to choose what I thought were the five most interesting events and write little blurbs about them. I did this for one of the editors for a radio show that goes on each week where they talk about what is going on over the weekend and in upcoming weeks. Another cool thing I did was I got sent information on competitions that Time Out was going to put on their website. I then had to write up something to intrigue people to want to sign up for the competition to win gift cards. All in all, I definitely sharpened up some of my skills even more this week. It’s the little things while I’m here that really count is what I am starting to learn.
Here are my write ups for the competitions:

Time Out Sydney Week 2

Last week at my internship was much quieter than my first week, but that was expected, I did have an amazing first week. I did a lot of research and fact checking for articles that are already on their website or will be going on their website. If you would like to know what to do Monday – Sunday in Sydney that is not alcohol related, hit me up, there is a 99.9% chance I have all of the answers. I also spent some time working on cleaning up and adding to a PR list. Although this is not journalism, I think it is a good skill to have, so I was okay with doing that work.

It really was a slow week, so I don’t have much to report on when it comes to projects and what I’ve done. I created some more events for the website’s “Things to Do” section. On Wednesday, I went on an adventure to The Rocks to go to the Visitor Centre and pick up every magazine and pamphlet that seemed helpful in what to do around Sydney. That was honestly a fun little excursion.
I wish I had more to fill this post up with, but I don’t really think I do. Although it was slower, it was still a good week and I look forward to what the rest of my summer has in store.
Here are some things I’ve already had published on Time Out Sydney’s website:

First Week at Time Out Sydney

I could not have possibly asked for a better first week of my internship. Within the first five days, I have already written two pieces for the website, attended a movie preview in an office theatre with my supervisor, and went to taste gelato at the best gelato place in Sydney. Time Out Sydney definitely takes care of their interns and wants them to leave this experience with a whole new set of writing skills.

I have already learned many skills when it comes to my writing and I believe that even within this first week I have tightened up my writing a bit. I have already had quite a bit of practice transcribing interviews for people as well. The other day, I transcribed an interview for Freya, the Food and Cafe Editor, and then she had me write an article on what I transcribed. This led to a full day of writing and editing and rewriting an article about wood-roasted coffee being roasted and served right here in Sydney. I knew it took a bit to get an article to its final stages, but I didn’t realise exactly how much time it took. I had my article reviewed by Freya at least three times and then my supervisor Nick looked over it with me another two times. It was a great learning experience.
Another thing I got to do was write a preview for a documentary film festival that is coming to Sydney next month. Nick had me go through all of the movie descriptions and pick the ten I found to be the most interesting. I then had to write a few sentences for each film describing it with as much concise detail as possible.
I have also had to search for several things that will lead to articles in the future. I have spent a lot of time this week helping out writers here with their research for future feature stories.
All in all this has been an amazing first week here at Time Out Sydney and I cannot wait to see what else this summer has in store for me. I am beyond grateful for this experience and I can’t imagine spending my summer doing anything else.

Coogee to Bondi

The Bondi to Coogee walk is one I have heard plenty about and was told to not miss out on it while I am in Sydney. My friends and I decided instead to get up early and start at Coogee so we could end at Bondi around lunch time. Let me tell you something, this walk really was worth it.

When we got off the bus at Coogee, we were still a 10 minute walk from the beach, so we weren’t immediately impressed. As soon as the ocean came into view, we were all stunned. It was so beautiful. We started the walk right away, but about 5 minutes into it, we found ourselves at this rocky area of the path that we ended up spending at least 20 minutes at. It was just that beautiful. It was right by the water and the waves kept crashing near us while we climbed on the rocks.

We then continued on the walk. All in all, it took us about 2&1/2 hours to do the walk and I’m pretty sure we somehow added two miles to our walk. We took in some beautiful views and admired the runners along the walk. It was such a wonderful experience and I suggest it to everyone who is lucky enough to come to Sydney.

The weather during the winter months in Sydney is actually perfect for this walk. It would have been nice to not have goosebumps while on the beach at Bondi, but it was still enjoyable. The views outweigh the negative of the few chilly moments. Plus, we got so hot on the walk, that when we got into the shade it felt amazing.

The Bondi to Coogee walk is definitely a must-do.

I’m back!!

Hey WordPress people ( or whoever is reading this). It’s been a long time since I have written anything, but I’m finally back. The school year has been crazy and I really haven’t done anything worth blogging about on here this semester. However, my adventures about to begin as I head to Australia to intern this summer. I leave on May 16th and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I am interning with Time Out Australia so I am bound to have some great adventures and experiences this summer that I cannot wait to share. I have a few restaurants I want to write about as well from this year, so hopefully in the coming weeks, I will get a chance to do that too. I hope that this time around, I can keep up with my blog and keep everyone updated on the coolest things to do wherever I find myself.

I’ll be back soon to share some fun stuff.
